Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

J's Gym Martial Arts Academy is recognised both nationally and internationally through competition and its affiliation with the Will/Machado organisation. The affiliation doesn't just ensure the legitimacy of our coaches' ranks and technical abilities but also gives our competitors and trainers the ability to interact, train, learn from, and compete with many of the best BJJ trainers and fighters in the world. BJJ has seen an increase in popularity as people are seeing its benefits in MMA events like the UFC, Strikeforce, and Bellator. The practicality of BJJ for self-defence is also becoming well recognised as more and more videos surface on the internet of BJJ practitioners restraining criminals until the police arrive.
You will find some of NZ's best trainers and very skilled competitors within J's Gym Academy. Though we are not strong with social media, we are definitely the largest and strongest growing BJJ academy in town. Along side Muay Thai, BJJ is now THE sport to be in.

Our goals at J's Gym Martial Arts Academy are: to introduce the sport to the wider community including teenagers and troubled youth; to train individuals in self-defence; increase awareness on physical health; and to develop a positive manner. Through these goals we aim to empower people from all ages and walks of life to unleash their full potential and achieve their goals both inside and outside of the Academy.
Participating in a sport such as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu not only provides a physical outlet and helps to improve peer respect, but also develops characteristics such as self-discipline, focus, and confidence. The structure of our classes teach our students to break a complex task into small pieces and do them one by one, making the task achievable. The requirement to step out of personal comfort zones and compete on the mats requires maturity and independence of thought.  The J’s Gym expectations of both reliability and enthusiasm towards the task at hand encourage a tenacious attitude.  These traits developed on the mats are necessary fundamentals for any community leader.

Take a look at our Timetable and find a class that works for you. We also offer private lessons via prior arrangement.
